Type SFK™
Permanent, flush joining of metal and PCB/plastic panels

The newest PEM® SpotFast® fastener permanently joins metal sheets to PC boards or plastic panels and creates a flush-attachment connection without protrusions on either side.

These fasteners offer practical alternatives to riveting or adhesives and their rotational capability extends application potential with the fastener serving as a single flush-mounted pivot point.
The steel fasteners (Type SFK) install smooth with the top metal sheet and flush or sub-flush with the bottom panel. When used as a pivot point, the top metal sheet is captivated between the head of the fastener and the lower (non-rotating) panel, which allows the metal sheet to rotate freely.

The fastener’s unique design featuring two separate clinch and knurl joining profiles holds the key. Squeezing the fastener into place using punch and anvil causes a cold-flow of the metal sheet material into the fastener’s clinch profile and a broaching fit of the knurled end into the PC board or plastic panel. The result is permanent and flush attachment of sheet to board or panel.

Standard parts can install with minimal space requirements into metal sheets as thin as .031”/0.8mm with hardness of 80 or less on the Rockwell “B” scale. Various head sizes and diameters are available to suit application needs.

Heavy Duty Stud Capabilities

Penn Engineering’s has the capabilities to manufacture heavy duty studs in larger thread sizes. With the equipment available in our various plants we can manufacture studs up to ½” and M14 in thread size. We can also offer various clinch configurations (including six-lobe Strux® type), thread strengths and MAThread® anti cross-threading feature.

In order to outline these capabilities we have created two capabilities brochures. One (Bulletin HDS), highlights our general capabilities to make a variety of these large threaded studs. The other (Bulletin LCS), focuses specifically on the six-lobe variety, dimensionally equivalent to the Strux style studs.

PF50/PF60 Panel Fastener Update

1) We have added the PF51, PF52, PF61 & PF62 sizes. The longer shanks on these parts provide greater pushout performance in thicker panels when desired.
2) We have added 4 dimples on the head to designate Metric threads as in most of our other panel fasteners.

These improvements are in response to customer requests. Customers have often asked for a choice in shank lengths like they can get with the PF30, PF31 and PF32 panel fasteners. Now they may choose the PF51/PF61 for panels of .040” / 1 mm minimum and the PF52/PF62 for panels of .060” / 1.5 mm minimum.
